RE
Intent
At Cottingley Village Primary School, we believe Religious Education (R.E.) plays a vital role in helping pupils understand the diverse world around them. Our intent is for all children to explore a range of religions and non-religious world views, fostering respect, curiosity, and open-mindedness.
Through R.E., we aim to nurture children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, as well as their understanding of British values. In line with our 6 Golden Leaves of Belonging—kindness, responsibility, respect, resilience, reflection and curiosity—we want pupils to ask meaningful questions, consider different beliefs, and reflect on their own values and identity.
Implementation
At Cottingley Village Primary School, we follow the locally agreed R.E. syllabus, Believing and Belonging in West Yorkshire. Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure clear progression from the Early Years through to Year 6. It offers children meaningful opportunities to learn both about and from a range of religions and non-religious world views, in an inclusive and respectful way.
Throughout their time at school, pupils explore:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
- Hindu Dharma
- Sikhi
- Buddhism
- Non-religious worldviews
Our R.E. curriculum is brought to life through visits to a variety of places of worship and visits from faith and community leaders. These experiences enhance pupils’ understanding and give context to their learning.
Impact
Our pupils develop a respectful understanding of different religions and beliefs, including non-religious views. They leave Cottingley with the confidence to engage in thoughtful discussion, ask big questions, and appreciate the beliefs and traditions of others.
R.E. at Cottingley supports children in becoming reflective, responsible, and compassionate individuals, well-prepared for life in a diverse and changing world—because together, we’ll succeed.

Statement Regarding the Right to Withdraw from Religious Education (RE)
At Cottingley Village Primary School, we are committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes Religious Education (RE) as a key component. RE offers pupils the opportunity to explore a range of beliefs, religions, and world views, encouraging respect, understanding, and tolerance for different perspectives.
We recognise that parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education, in accordance with the Education Act 1996 and the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. This right allows parents to opt out if they feel that the content covered does not align with their personal beliefs or wishes for their child’s education.
If you wish to withdraw your child from all or part of RE, we kindly request that you inform the school in writing. We will then arrange a discussion to understand your concerns and explore potential alternative arrangements for your child during RE lessons.
While we respect every family's beliefs and decisions, we encourage parents and carers to consider the value of RE in promoting inclusivity, tolerance, and cultural awareness.
For further information or to discuss the process, please contact the school office.
